What is Holy Basil?

You may be most familiar with sweet basil, as you may currently be growing it in your backyard garden or in your kitchen on a sunny windowsill, but holy basil is not the same as sweet basil. Though closely related, holy basil is also known as tulsi and is a flowering plant of the mint family. Revered in India for more than 5,000 years as “The Queen of Herbs,” holy basil is grown for its aromatic leaves.

Benefits of Holy Basil

Native to the Indian subcontinent, holy basil grows throughout Southeast Asia and is widely used in Ayurvedic practices as an herbal tea for a variety of ailments. Holy basil is also a powerful adaptogen that supports balance in all systems of the body and is most often regarded for its stress-relieving properties. This flowering plant is so powerful it is even considered sacred in Hinduism.

All parts of the holy basil plant act as an adaptogen. As a reminder, an adaptogen is a natural substance that helps the body adapt to stress and promotes mental balance. Although adaptogens are rooted in a holistic approach, scientific research shows holy basil can help the mind cope with various types of stress including chemical, emotional, infectious, and physical stressors. Holy basil has also been found to have anti-anxiety and antidepressant properties. Yeah, it is safe to say holy basil is an herb for all reasons and seasons.

How to Use Holy Basil

Like its sweet basil counterpart, holy basil can be used as a culinary herb. Reminiscent of a few flavors like clove, Italian basil, and mint, holy basil has a bitter and peppery spiciness that intensifies with cooking. Holy basil can also be enjoyed raw or brewed into tea. Do not worry, it is caffeine-free.

Cooking is great and all, but in our opinion, why cook it when you can drink it instead? We like to use holy basil for its balancing properties, which is why we included it in one of our favorite Adaptonic flavors - Strawberry Holy Basil.
